Information and personal data security discussed at Ministry of Internal Affairs
Friday, in Chisinau took place a round table named "Information security within Ministry of Internal Affairs". The event is part of "Information Security Week" organized by the Government of Republic of Moldova in partnership with the E-Government Center (EGC) during October 15-19.
During the round table the participants – representatives of ministries, governmental institutions and foreign experts – discussed the importance of implementing an information security policy and standards for protecting information.
The participants also alerted that the lack of information security policy is the biggest problem within the ministries. According to them, the public servants are not ready to manage information and don’t take responsibility for the accessed data.
Minister of Internal Affairs, Dorin Recean welcomed e-Government Center’s activity: "It's good to have such campaigns because of the importance of information security awareness. Currently, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) undertakes an assessment of the level of information security insurance, including the terms of information confidentiality and ensuring the security of certain processes."
"I think both the ministry and the government underestimate the information security risks. Such initiatives as "Information Security in Government Week" need to be held regularly, once in six months", also mentioned Dorin Recean.
In turn, Training Coordinator at EGC, Margareta Petrusevschi specified that in order to ensure information security in Government, "the authorities must act immediately, at individual level, the level of a simple public servant and not wait for the implementation of security systems and policies at governmental level".
Participant at the event, Hannes Astok, Program Director at the Academy of e-Government, Estonia, said that "The Republic of Moldova needs to revise the regulations on information and personal data security insurance. Every public servant should have the culture of awareness of the importance of information and personal data security."
According to Richard Marshall, Vice-President and Senior Consultant at Axon Global Services, founder of the X-SES Consultants, "The cyberspace is created by man, so we can manage it, control it and, if necessary, change it for the use according to the laws. We are facing many problems within the Internet and information and personal data security is an important factor for effective governance."
Information Security in Government Week is held under the slogan "Make yourself at home in cyberspace, be safe" and includes a series of activities addressed to public servants, businesses, civil society and citizens.
